The story of the wise men is so familiar, we fail to notice how odd it is. Why do some stargazers from Persia even care about a new king born to the Jews? And if the star is over Bethlehem, why do they go first to Jerusalem? And why don’t the scribes go with the wise men to look for the new king? Shouldn’t the Jewish scribes be more interested in the king of the Jews than some foreign wise men? This Sunday’s sermon looks at the story of the wise men from a new angle: “Looking for Leadership”—Matthew 2:1-12.
